Eudaimonia

Eudaimonia is an Ancient Greek concept often translated as “living well” or “human flourishing.”

In Aristotle’s philosophy, it refers to the highest kind of human good. It is not just a temporary feeling of happiness, but a life built through virtue, purpose, and fulfilling one’s potential.

Aristotle developed this idea most influentially in the “Nicomachean Ethics” in the 4th century BCE.

It can be applied when a person chooses meaningful and growth-oriented actions over immediate pleasure, such as pursuing purposeful work, acting with integrity, or making difficult decisions that help them become a better person.

In this sense, eudaimonia differs from modern happiness. It is not a passing emotion, but a lifelong process of living well and becoming who you are capable of being.
